Only LifeFlight has a dedicated Communications Center located within its base of operations. The LifeFlight Flight Communications Center is located within Vanderbilt Medical Center. Using a system of protocols and sophisticated equipment, the LifeFlight Flight Coordinators activate the Operating Room and mobilize critical staff to meet the patient's rapidly changing needs.
The LifeFlight Advantage
Vanderbilt LifeFlight is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Trauma Systems (CAMTS). LifeFlight transports to ALL Nashville hospitals and has direct access to the hospitals' Operating Rooms and Emergency Departments. In addition, Vanderbilt LifeFlight has immediate access to the region's only Level I Trauma Center, Burn Center and Children's Hospital.
LifeFlight is a key part of a Trauma System that includes prehospital care, definitive care, rehabilitation and injury prevention.
Clinical Competence
- LifeFlight nurses have an average of 10 years of experience in a tertiary care hospital providing emergency and/or critical care.
- LifeFlight training is competency based and covers all clinical areas of care including the adult and pediatric emergency department, Coronary Care Unit, Trauma Center, Burn Center, Neuro ICU, Pediatric ICU, as well as emergency obstetrics and respiratory care.
- LifeFlight recurrent training includes a quarterly surgical skills lab where invasive procedures such as chest tube placement, cricothryroidotomy, pericardiocentesis and femoral line insertion are taught. Additionally, difficult airway management skills are taught in the Adult and Pediatric Operating Room.
- LifeFlight carries life-saving blood products on every flight.
- Staff and physicians meet in a biweekly chart review to ensure patient care meets or exceeds national standards.
Medical Control
LifeFlight has immediate access to 24/7 on-line medical control. LifeFlight's medical director is Dr. John Morris. Also on the staff are representative physicians from Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology, Toxicology, and Pediatric Critical Care. Each of these physicians is available at any time for questions or consultation. LifeFlight nurses practice under nationally established protocols for the care of the critically ill and injured pediatric and adult patients. The flight crew is able to communicate directly with receiving physicians by phone or radio at any time if needed.
